Ash & Sons

Alexander Ash & Sons were a sizeable producer of bottled beers judging by the wealth of recovered bottles, they are listed as brewers operating from James St, Devonport between 1906 and 1923 or later. However, the company are listed as far back as 1852 operating as ale & porter merchants from the same street.

One lasting memento of the company is the Two Trees pub in Union Street, the two trees referred to in the name are the ash and oak (the pub originally had an ash bar and an oak bar), these being references to Ash & Sons who owned the pub and the old Royal Oak pub whose licence was transferred to the new establishment.

The bottles recovered consist of glass beer bottles with simple embossing, variations in colour, size & closure are found.
