Bedford Brewery

This company was founded in 1824 by Polkinghorne & Co at premises in Bedford St, Plymouth.

In 1898 the company moved to new premises in Beechwood, Mutley

Bedford Brewery (Plymouth) Ltd was registered in 1900 with the brewery and 22 pubs

In 1904 the company purchased John Kelland’s London Brewery, Kingsbridge

The company entered liquidation in 1908 and a new company was set up as New Bedford Brewery (Plymouth) Ltd

In 1919 the company was acquired by Allsopps before going into liquidation once more in January 1920 and being acquired by New Victoria Brewery Co Ltd.

Once again, the bottle evidence for this company is fairly scarce perhaps indicating a low volume of production. As with Ash & Sons, the bottles recovered are generally dark coloured beer bottles with the company’s details embossed in a diamond formation although variations do exist. The scarcest of these variations is possibly the swing stopper bottle with embossing in an arch shape.
