Butcher

 

Another seemingly small volume producer, and hence rare bottle to find, the company operated until 1889 and is listed as early as 1844 (Thomas Butcher, brewer). The premises were variously in Chapel St and Tweedside Place, Stonehouse.

 

The company was eventually absorbed by The Plymouth Breweries in 1889 having been run up to that time by Mrs Amanda Henrietta Butcher.

 

The company’s ginger beer bottles bear a distinctive arrow trade mark on the transfer. Variations of this design are found as are codd bottles bearing similar arrow trade marks. A rare example indeed is a 6oz codd bottle bearing the Butcher / Stonehouse motif along with embossing of “The Plymouth Breweries”. If only the bottles bore the Anchor Brewery trade mark shown in the advertisement below!
