Hicks
The Hicks name is found in five Plymouth
companies, the most significant being Hicks & Co, Hicks & Webber,
Richard Hicks and John Hicks of Zion St, Plymouth.
The companies were all variously ale &
porter merchants, wine & spirit merchants and brewer’s agents, the
addresses and history are probably best deciphered from the gazetteer rather
than attempting an explanation here.
Hicks & Co (South Devon Brewery) of Willow
St, Plymouth were absorbed into Plymouth Breweries in 1889
Finds from any of the companies are scarce and
consist mainly of stoneware flagons of various types. Noteable exceptions are
two recently recovered codd bottles bearing the embossing John Hicks /
Plymouth.
