Lake

Lake & Co were operating as soda water manufacturers from premises in Gibbons St, Plymouth by at the latest 1880. They later operated from Gilwell St, Plymouth until around 1890.

The company was involved in the prosecution of Thomas Pratt for the illegal use of its bottles in apparent retaliation for Lake’s use of Pratt’s bottles on a previous occasion. A prosecution of Lake & Co for using Pratt’s bottles was dropped due to Lake’s factory being destroyed by fire.

There is not much further information available regarding Lake & Co and bottle finds are rare but recovered bottles suggest that early production was of significant volume. Amongst the bottles recovered have been saltglaze impressed ginger beer bottles and Codd – Hamilton hybrid types although few complete examples have been recovered.
