Picken
Samuel
Picken & Co were wine and spirit merchants operating from impressive
premises in Whimple Street, Plymouth from at least 1844. The premises
eventually joined the list of those that were wiped from the map by German
bombers and post-war redevelopment. A unique brass plaque that came to light
showed that, at some point post-war, the company seems to have been run in
conjunction with Popplestone & Co and indeed shared offices. This is
supported by a 1952 trade publication which lists both companies as having the
same directors.
Bottles
recovered bearing the company’s details include glass spirit flasks and
stoneware flagons.
