Rockett

Herbert Rockett is listed as a ginger beer manufacturer in the 1852 directory and is likely to have been operating for some years prior to this date, his premises were at 14 Cornwall St, Devonport. The company appears to have closed in around 1881. Interestingly, in 1878 Herbert Rockett is listed as a baker and ginger beer manufacturer.

Recovered bottles are rare but include impressed ginger beer bottles (in salt glaze and slip glaze) and codd bottles in both 6oz & 10oz sizes. The codd bottles bear the Rylands & Codd trade mark making them easily dateable to the late 1870s.

Interestingly, the codd bottles bear the licence number 564 which is later used by G.Crocker whose operating dates follow directly on from those of Rockett and whose premises were in the same street. Thus it may be assumed that Crocker took over the operations of Rockett in 1881.
