Stephens

Unsurprisingly, there are a number of companies within the three towns that used the Stephens name, some more significant than others.

John Stephens was a wine & spirit merchant in Hampton St, Plymouth c1850

Stephens & Co (Late Fox & Co) were wine & spirit merchants and brewer’s agents operating from Catherine St, Devonport from 1852 until some time after 1919. This is the most frequently encountered Stephens in terms of bottles. The recovered bottles consist of dark glass beer type bottles and stoneware flagons of various types

Another Stephens & Co operated as wine & spirit merchants from Cambridge St, Plymouth in around 1895

Stephens Ale Stores operated from Pond Lane, Devonport in 1932 – 1933

There was also a company operating in Plympton using the Stephens name and the slogan “Stephens’ sparkling mineral water” whose codd bottles are a rare find, presumably this would be related Stephens & Graham or Shuker & Stephens of Ridgeway, Plympton.
