Vosper

 

The Vosper name has a long connection with brewing in the Stonehouse area and can be identified in several companies;

 

Peter Vosper was a wine & spirit merchant operating from Union St, Stonehouse in 1844

 

Samuel Vosper is listed as a wine & spirit merchant at 110 Union St, Stonehouse in 1852 before being listed as a brewer in Chapel St from 1877 – 1889. This company was absorbed by the Plymouth Breweries in 1889 and the Chapel St (Regent Brewery) premises continued in use.

 

Samuel Vosper was the first managing director of the Plymouth Breweries.

 

Samuel Vosper Junior is listed as a wine & spirit merchant in Chapel St, Stonehouse in 1893 and in the same year is listed as the operator of the Posada Wine Vaults at Caroline Place, Stonehouse.

 

Samuel Vosper issued various bottle types including Codd bottles. All finds from this company are scarce.
