Wine Merchants
Obviously, a vast
number of wine & spirit merchants have operated within the three towns and
it would not be practical to list them all here. Indeed, tracing the companies is
a difficult job in itself as so many were merely general merchants who happened
to also deal in these products and are not fully listed in the trade
directories. The gazetteer includes as many of these companies as it was
possible to identify from the trade directories available.
Some have been
mentioned in their own right elsewhere in this publication but a great many
lesser companies have left bottles or flagons bearing their details, a typical
selection of items are shown below;
